Papers of the Eure, Jordan, and Mitchell families of Hertford and Gates counties, N.C. Papers of Mills H. Eure are primarily slave papers, consisting of bills of sale, mortgages, and receipts for sale of slaves; deeds (1808 and 1830s-1880s); insurance papers (1860 and 1866); and writs and legal papers. Jordan family papers include wills and records relating to the estates of five descendants of Hertford County, four of them predating the fire of 1862 that destroyed the county's records, including accounts, receipts, wills, and papers concerning cotton, lumber, a sawmill, and schools. Papers of James Saunders Mitchell (d. 1918), sheriff of Hertford County, contain personal papers including accounts, banking papers, bills, business correspondence, wills, and contract with architects, bills, and correspondence relating to the building of his house, Gray Gables (1899-1900); political and Farmers' State Alliance of North Carolina papers; and civic papers including sheriff's papers and papers relating to Winton High School and Winton Baptist Church. Papers of Adrian Seymour Mitchell, son of James Saunders Mitchell include personal correspondence, deeds, and material relating to his postmastership of Winston, N.C., the N.C. State Board of Elections, and World War I, and political files including correspondence (1923-1952), material relating to the 1928 election, and papers from his service as mayor of Winton. Topics include the Republican and Populist parties in North Carolina.
